The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) Statement on Puppy Socialization:
” THE PRIMARY AND MOST IMPORTANT time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. During this time puppies should be exposed to as many new people, animals, stimuli and environments as can be achieved safely and without causing over-stimulation manifested as excessive fear, withdrawal or avoidance behavior. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. ” See the AVSAB’s statement on Puppy Socialization here.

The AVSAB’s Position Statement on The Use of Punishment for Behavior Modification:
” AVSAB’s position is that punishment (e.g. choke chains, pinch collars, and electronic collars) should not be used as a first-line or early-use treatment for behavior problems. This is due to the potential adverse effects which include but are not limited to: inhibition of learning, increased fear-related and aggressive behaviors, and injury to animals and people interacting with animals.” See the AVSAB’s statement on The Use of Punishment for Behavior Modification here.
